Latvia. 1926. 2 Lati. 9.98g. Silver (.835). XF. C617. RI.9

1. A symbol of rebirth.
The coin was among the very first silver issues of independent Latvia, celebrating the country’s recovery after World War I and its hard-won independence in 1918. It wasn’t just money — it was a national statement.

2. Designed by a master.
The design came from Rihards Zariņš, one of Latvia’s greatest graphic artists and the author of the state coat of arms and early banknotes. His style blends national romanticism with classical European engraving.

3. Triple stars, triple meaning.
The three stars above the coat of arms stand for Latvia’s three historic regions: Kurzeme, Vidzeme, and Latgale — united under one sun.

4. A strong currency, a trusted metal.
The 2 lati were struck in .835 fine silver, showing Latvia’s intention to back its new currency with real value. In the 1920s, the Lat was one of the most stable currencies in Eastern Europe.

5. Superb craftsmanship.
Collectors admire its crisp strike and elegant proportions — often comparing it to the Swiss franc or German Reichsmark for precision and beauty.

6. Vanished under occupation.
After the Soviet annexation in 1940, the 2 lati coins were withdrawn and many melted down. Surviving originals are prized relics of pre-war Latvia.

7. The “Baltic franc.”
Among European numismatists, the 2 lati is sometimes nicknamed the “Baltic franc” because of its refined design and trustworthy metal content.
