S475 — Spain 1955–1956, Super Constellation and Santa María — Edifil 1169–1178
Identification: Ten Spanish airmail stamps from the eleven-value Super Constellation y nao Santa María issue (Edifil 1169–1179). This group comprises Edifil 1169–1178; the 10 pesetas Edifil 1179 is missing. Values: 20c, 25c, 50c, 1p, 1.10p, 1.40p, 3p, 4.80p, 5p and 7p.
Technical details: Photogravure (huecograbado) by Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre. Edifil catalogue perforation 12¾ (not independently measured). The common design depicts a Lockheed Super Constellation aeroplane superimposed on the sailing ship Santa María.
Condition assessment: Mixed unused, mint hinged and cancelled. The 20c, 1.10p and 3p appear unused with no visible hinge remnants, but MNH gum status remains to be confirmed. The 25c reverse is mottled and requires inspection for possible gum deterioration. The 50c, 1p and 7p show visible hinge remnants. The 1.40p, 4.80p and 5p are used; the 5p has a conspicuous circular cancellation. Perforations generally appear complete, with no obvious major tears in scans. Overall Collection Grade 3/5.
Historical and philatelic notes: This airmail series contrasts the transatlantic age of exploration, represented by Santa María, with mid-twentieth-century international aviation, represented by the Lockheed Super Constellation. This is an incomplete 10-of-11 group, not a complete set.
Edifil 2025 mixed-condition catalogue reference: €2.15 (working sum using the provisionally assigned conditions). AllCollect Collection Value: €1.55 (condition-adjusted). Collection Grade: 3/5. Investment Grade: 1/5. Decision: KEEP / UPGRADE. Certificate: Not required.
